ESOF (EuroScience Open Forum) is the largest interdisciplinary science meeting in Europe. Created in 2004 by EuroScience, this biennial European forum brings together researchers, educators, business actors, policy makers and journalists from all over the world to discuss breakthroughs in science. The 8th edition of ESOF took place in Toulouse, France, from 9 till 14 July 2018 and over 4 000 participants were registered. The motto of ESOF 2018 was "Sharing science: towards new horizons" and Toulouse has obtained the denomination "European City of Science 2018”.
During 2017 and 2018, organisers of scientific events in Toulouse and its region (Occitanie) could apply for the label "ESOF 2018 Toulouse, European City of Science 2018”. Nearly 200 scientific events in the Occitanie region have obtained the label after evaluation by a scientific committee appointed by the university. Four criteria for the labelling have been defined according to the main features of ESOF 2018: scientific quality, link with society, European dimension and involvement of young people.
